Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket donates towards rehabilitation of white-handed gibbons

image002Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket management team met with members of the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GRP) to donate money on behalf of resort guests and staff towards the rehabilitation of the island’s previously extinct white-handed gibbon species.

The donation money was collected during the resort’s activities for Earth Hour, an annual event organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature, which this year was held on 29 March.

GRP is the longest operating gibbon re-introduction project in the world, and in Phuket has focused since 2002 on the breeding programme of white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar), which has been introduced in the Khao Phra Thaew Wildlife Park.

This national park is the largest remaining evergreen rainforest on the island, located in the north and covering an area of 2,228 ha, which is large enough to sustain between 40 and 60 gibbon territories.

The white-handed gibbon is native to Phuket, but hunters supplying tourism outlets and the exotic pets market poached the species to extinction between the 1970s and early 80s. The Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand (WARF) in 1994 started the campaign to reintroduce the species.
