Central African Wilderness Safaris (CAWS), a leading travel and ecotourism company in Malawi has launched its latest green initiative – a ‘Tree with Every Trip’, to provide agents and guests with the opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of their travels. Carbon emissions are one of the main contributors to global warming and planting trees has widely been recognized as one of the most efficient ways of offsetting those emissions whilst combating climate change and ensuring the protection of the planet. Over 10 years, each tree planted will sequester 200 kg of carbon, returning valuable oxygen to the environment.
Guests travelling with CAWS will now have the option of adding USD 2 to their final travel bill, which will fund the planting of a tree in Chintheche, Malawi. Guests and agents can also opt to plant 10 trees for USD 20 or can work with Root to Fruit to calculate and offset the carbon emissions generated from their entire journey. All seedlings will be monitored and planted in a dedicated tree nursery, which will be run by Root to Fruit at Chintheche Inn (Central African Wilderness Safaris’ lakeshore property). Root to Fruit is a not-for-profit social enterprise that enables individuals and corporations to offset the carbon emissions from their travels, daily lives and business activities.
Commenting on the initiative, Chris Badger – Managing Director, Central African Wilderness Safaris stated: “We are truly excited to launch a ‘Tree with Every Trip’ an initiative which will enable us to minimize our carbon footprint, whilst encouraging our valued agents and guests to give back to the planet on their travels. A comprehensive set of marketing materials and a seamless add-on process have been developed to make this initiative as easy as possible for our guests and agents to participate in. We do look forward to receiving the full support of our valued agent network as well as our local and international guests in making this initiative a sustainable and successful endeavor. As an ecotourism company, the concept of “green travel” and considering our impact on the environment is an integral part of operation. We are immensely proud to incorporate this add-on into our offering, and we look forward to everyone who travels with us, extending their patronage to this new endeavor.”
Also commenting on the initiative, Ralf Holmström, Co-Founder & Partner – Root to Fruit stated: “Root to Fruit has been operational in Malawi since 2012 and we are delighted that Central African Wilderness Safaris has introduced this initiative, to encourage travellers to plant a tree to offset some of the carbon emissions that might be generated from their journeys. Root to Fruit services clients from around the globe who seek to make their operations carbon neutral by planting trees with us. Additionally, the RTF team has recorded impressive seedling survival rates of over 75% which is a testament of how each tree planted under the team’s care is carefully monitored. Our operation is headed by Master Banda, a renowned forestry professional with decades of experience. Aside from giving back to the planet at large and assisting with the reforestation of Malawi, Root to Fruit also provides employment and training opportunities for the local community.”
