This 100 million Baht food festival is the country’s first ever Thai-European food culture presentation, and is expected to generate revenues of more than 500 million Baht.
Central Bangkok, the capital’s economic and premium tourism hub, is spending more than 100 million Baht on organizing Thailand’s newest signature event “Central Bangkok Tastes of the World” which will be one of the world’s largest food festivals. It consists of 3 elements, namely Bangkok Waree @CentralWorld, Central Food Hall World Gastronomy, and Eathai Expansion
This ‘Food Technopolis’ will revolutionize how people experience food in being the first food festival that presents how Thai and European culinary culture merge together in Thailand as well as presenting the unique aspects of cuisine. Both traditional and contemporary styles of cooking food along with secret preparation tips of different cooks are also revealed. Central Bangkok Tastes of the World is a World Food Festival that Thai and International tourists including our AEC neighbors cannot miss. As one of the largest world food festivals ever held in Thailand, Central Bangkok Tastes of the World will become one of the most famous and anticipated annual food festivals in the years to come.
The festival is expected to increase the number of both Thai and international tourists by at least 30% and generate revenue exceeding 500 million Baht which will help boost the Thai tourism sector and overall economy.
Mr. Pichai Chirathivat, a member of business operator partners in Central Bangkok, reveals that Central Bangkok has allocated more than 100 million Baht to organize world-class food festival, “Central Bangkok Tastes of the World”. It is expected to become one of Thailand’s annual signature events that will be widely mentioned and attract tourists. The festival aims to showcase three extraordinary events in Central Bangkok that allow visitors to learn more about new cooking innovations. It is hoped that this will solidify Thailand’s global standing as a Food Destination, especially among Asian cuisines, and be a factor in pushing Thai food to become one of in the world’s top three cuisines in the near future. (As of 2015, Thai food was ranked fourth by CNN Travel). Moreover, this event will support the Thai economy and help food business operators generate more income.

The event presents Thai arts and cultural activities including the traditional way of life along the Chao Phraya River, the main artery that has nourished Bangkok from the past up until the present day. The riverside is intimately associated with the city and the diverse charms of the original communities residing on Rattanakosin Island have given rise to a uniquely picturesque lifestyle created by the diversity of cultures. This event will also allow people in society to learn some of the history and background of cultural Bangkok.”
The concept of the event is derived from the number ‘234’, the number of years of the Rattanakosin anniversary, and is used as a symbol to convey the way of life along the river. The Chao Phraya River divides the capital into the Phra Nakhon side (Bangkok) and the Bangkok Noi side (Thonburi). Three Riverside Communities at Thonburi (Bangkok Noi, Talingchan, and Kudichin)
We have brought together some of the country’s greatest culinary delicacies in zones named after three famous communities in Thonburi.
Bangkok Noi zone has many great products and a delicious selection of food from all regions of Thailand. Try Pad Thai in a woven platter-like basket, and a 70-year recipe of kuaytiew lot (flat noodle roll with bean sprouts) from the Bangkulad floating market.
Check out Taling Chan zone, a contemporary floating market with outstanding fresh food and delicious dishes such as the 100-year old recipe of braised platu (short bodied mackerel), Auntie Daeng’s khanom jeen (fermented rice noodles with curry), somsa meekrob (sweet crispy rice vermicelli), khanom bueang Yuan (Vietnamese crispy crepes), and assorted fruits, vegetables, and plants from Taling Chan farmers.
The KudiChin zone is an old community where people from three different religions and four races live together. Try khao yum samunprai (herb and rice salad), Khanom Kudi Chin (crispy sponge cakes), khao krieb pakmor Yuan (Vietnamese steamed wontons), ancient Portuguese cuisine influenced desserts created by the legendary Thao Thong Kip Ma (Maria Guimar), Muslim food such as gai golae Pattani (spicy Southern grilled chicken) and khaomok gai (Thai chicken biryani).
The four communities along the canal around PhraNakhon include Ta Tian (a market in front of the Grand Palace) where sellers transported fish and fresh food by boats to that market before taking the remainder to Pak Klong market where many Chinese lived. This zone will include presentations on the way of life of Ta Tian people in a miniature form, with traditional Chinese food and desserts such as Bang Nam Phueng’s Peanut Crispy Candy making demonstration, and traditional Sukhothai tom yum noodles.
Pak Khlong Talad zone is a floral heaven. Not only is it the city’s biggest flower market, but it also sells fruit and vegetables from the vendors there. Banglumpoo zone is where vintage shoppers can truly indulge. There will also be demonstrations of khao matupayat (milk rice pudding) that was served more than a thousand years ago. The last zone, Phukhaothong, brings in people to demonstrate monk alms bowl making, making ancient desserts like khanom khrueang thong, and traditional children’s games

Ms. Piyawan Leelasompop, Executive Vice President- Marketing, Central Department Store states that Eathai, the best and most comprehensive offering of Thai food in the world, is spending 40 million baht to improve this space with the opening event “Eathai Expansion” revealing 13 Zones from 21 July to 7 August 2016 at the Lower Ground floor of Central Embassy. The event will consist of special promotions and entertainment in Thai traditional atmosphere under “Ting Nong Noi” concept. Traffic is forecasted to increase to 3,500 people per day, more than triple its daily traffic. Last year, Eathai welcomed 540,748 customers (1,500 people per day). Recently, Eathai won TripAdvisor’s “The Best Service in 2016” award along with Central Chidlom and Central Embassy.
From a total budget of 40 million Baht, 30 million Baht is being used to expand the space from 2,500 to 3,550 sqm. There will be a total of 13 smaller zones such as Little Chinatown from Sanyod Thai-Chinese restaurant and Eathai Café for quick meals in a 150sqm space. The food covers possible meal time from easy breakfasts, to appetizers, soups, and rice dishes. Moom-Aroi zone brings in a wide variety of main dishes and desserts from famous markets around Bangkok. Restaurants will be replaced every 2 weeks to Bangkok people’s lifestyle and to ensure that Thai and foreign foodies can always find something new.
Another 10 million Baht is allocated for “Eathai Expansion” which will celebrate its new appearance with promotions and entertaining activities such as comedic shows, Phi Ta Khon and Thai floral garlands making from 21 July – 7 August 2016.
After the opening of Eathai Expansion, the number of customers will increase from 1,500 to 3,500 people per day and it is expected that 40% will be Thai and 60% of its customers are foreigners of which 30% are Asean, 20% European-American and 10% Middle Eastern.
