image010This year marks the centenary of the main science program undertaken by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) led by legendary scientist and explorer Sir Douglas Mawson.

In conjunction with the University of NSW, Adventure Associates is offering members of the public a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of the 2013-2014 Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) to Commonwealth Bay and the Sub-Antarctic Islands.

This is not a regular tourist voyage to Mawson’s Huts. It is a true scientific expedition. Passengers will join a team of world-renowned scientists as they undertake research on Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic oceanography, climate and biology, and will play an active part in the scientific programs.

Led by climate change specialists Professor Chris Turney and Dr Chris Fogwill from the University image011of NSW and Adventure Associates owner and Antarctic veteran, Greg Mortimer; the voyages will repeat century old measurements to discover and communicate the environmental changes taking place in the south.

Only 26 berths are being offered to the public on each of these two unique expeditions. Adventure Associates is the exclusive agent for public sales on these voyages.

The first 13-day Spirit of Mawson Voyage departs from Bluff, New Zealand on 25 November 2013 and visits the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sub-Antarctic islands of Australia and New Zealand to experience these amazing sanctuaries of wildlife deep in the Southern Ocean and the scientific work being conducted there. Prices start from $8050 image012per person, twin-share in a superior cabin with private bathroom including all meals on board.

The second 28-day Spirit of Mawson Voyage departs from Hobart on 8 December 2013 and will chart a course south for Commonwealth Bay, making scientific observations along the way. The aim is to reach the original AAE huts at Cape Denison and undertake an extensive science program, focussing on marine biology and oceanography. Prices start from $16,900 per person, twin-share.
