Cheaper to fly to London from NZ or from Oz?

March 17, 2017 Headline News No Comments Email Email

STA Travel is making headlines on the other side of the Tasman with the release of some very low fares to London, raising the question of whether New Zealand or Australia offers the cheapest flights to Britain.

STA is offering NZD 979 return fares from Auckland to London for travel from 8 September to 17 November 2017 when booked by 24 March 2017, or until flights sell out.

Converting the fare to Australian dollars brings the fare to AUD 890.

The carrier is Philippine Airlines. The Fairfax online site in New Zealand quoted House of Travel marketing director Ken Freer saying his agency also offered the NZD 979 fare – while a Flight Centre spokesman confirmed that, in line with the company’s lowest airfare guarantee, it would beat the price if asked.

In Australia, STA Travel was yesterday advertising a return fare to London from Sydney for AUD 899 and from Melbourne for AUD 955, flying Royal Brunei.

Scoot teased the market a few months back with fares from Perth to Athens via Singapore starting at AUD 369 one-way. The route costs only marginally more (AUD 419) from Australian east coast points like Sydney, the Gold Coast and Melbourne. Make it a return and you’re up to AUD 838. Scoot starts its Athens route in June using B787-8 Dreamliners, the planes that form its fleet.

Which raises another question for agents – how can anyone make a buck selling travel at rates like that?
