Chef Nooror Somany Steppe, Founder and Creative Chef of Blue Elephant Cooking School & Restaurant, was the first Thai Chef ever to be invited to promote Thai cuisine and culture at the United Nations’ “Discover Thainess 2015” extravaganza, staged at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City recently. Chef Nooror was a special guest of His Excellency Mr. Virachai Plasai Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Thailand to the United Nations New York, who organized the five-day event in collaboration with the Royal Thai Consulate-General, New York, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
Chef Nooror conducted a full-house cooking demonstration daily for five consecutive days at the United Nations Delegates Dining Room in New York where she shared with the participants precious recipes of some of Blue Elephant’s signature dishes widely raved by the restaurant’s “fans” and a huge following from around the world including: “Massaman Curry with Lamb”, “Phad Thai Tamarind Sauce”, “Klua Kling Minced Tofu”; “Duck Salad with Tangerine Sauce”, “Yum Ma Muang Koong Sod”, amongst many other savoury dishes.
“I am grateful for every platform that I am given to share my cooking and knowledge with Thai food lovers. I believe that Thai cuisine which is both healthy and tasty, will continue to inspire and arouse diners all over the globe and I’m proud to be the first Thai chef to be invited to share this vital part of our culture with the United Nations,” said Chef Nooror. “Our way of cooking with local herbs, spices and market-fresh ingredients entices every palate with authenticity in flavors.”
On the final day of the cooking demonstration guests enjoyed an elegant Thai buffet spread for 350 delegates of the United Nations. The menu was composed of 8 starters, 8 main courses and 8 desserts which were halal so that all nationalities within the UN could enjoy Chef Nooror’s Thai cooking. Included in the menu to the delight of the guests were such Blue Elephant’s all-time favorites such as, “Spicy Scallops with Thai Herbs topped with Crispy Sea Bass” served as Tapas; “Spicy Salmon Salad”, “Lobster with Thai Wild Herbs”, “Panaeng Red Curry with Wagyu Beef”, “Avocado with Prawns Salad”, to name but a few.
Participants of the cooking demonstrations as well as distinguished guests who had the opportunity to taste Chef Nooror’s world renowned Thai cuisine were completely enthralled; and happily took home as a special memento which was none other than Chef Nooror’s own Blue Elephant Curry Paste!
