The first of a series of Chinese self-drive tours is travelling around the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region with exciting new activities included in the group’s tour.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Rob Giason said Zhejiang CYTS had organised the tour which is being filmed for a program to be aired on Hangzhou TV next month featuring self-drive travel in the region.

“Zhejiang CYTS hopes to bring a group of self-drive travellers to Cairns each month after this first tour,” he said.

“This group from Hangzhou in the Zhejiang Province consists of a family, a couple and groups of friends adding up to 16 people and a tour guide in five cars for a four day tour.

“They will be staying on the Atherton Tablelands, in Port Douglas and in Cairns with visits to Kuranda and the Daintree.

“Their activities include platypus spotting, the Great Barrier Reef, a wildlife zoo and white water rafting.

“This is the first time a Chinese group has booked white water rafting so it is good to see this market trying new activities as well as spreading further throughout the region.

“TTNQ has done extensive work in-market to lengthen the stay of Chinese travellers in the region and equip travel agents with the resources to create special itineraries for independent travellers.

“Self-drive travellers will add yet another dimension to this market which is rapidly heading towards its potential of 200,000 Chinese visitors by 2015.

“For the year ending June 2013 we received 147,000 visitors from Greater China giving our region a 53 per cent market share of the Chinese holiday and leisure visitors to Queensland.”
