In the final week of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia’s annual month-long cruise promotion #ChooseCruise, the association is encouraging holidaymakers to choose an expedition cruise if they yearn for an adventure on the high seas.

According to CLIA Australasia & Asia Managing Director Joel Katz, expedition cruising is one of the industry’s biggest growth sectors with nearly a quarter of the new ships on order classed as small or expedition ships.

“Expedition cruising is experiencing a surge in popularity that will continue for years to come as dozens of new ships take to the seas, offering more choice than ever before.

“With more and more cruisers seeking transformational travel and itineraries to off-the-beaten-track destinations, expedition cruising is set to shake off its niche label and become more mainstream,” Mr Katz said.

“Different to traditional holidays at sea, expedition cruises are often the first port of call for travellers who don’t consider themselves typical cruisers, as well as the last port of call for frequent cruisers ready to try something different.

“In lieu of casinos and theatres, expedition cruises offer a cultural immersion with onboard lectures and shore excursions often led by experts in their field whether that’s a writer, naturalist, scientist or professor.

“Packed with enriching experiences from up-close-and-personal wildlife encounters in Antarctica to thrilling journeys deep into the Kimberley wilderness, expedition cruising is a great way to make an authentic connection with a destination,” Mr Katz said.

“Expedition ships are usually smaller meaning there are less passengers onboard and they can reach ports inaccessible by bigger ships. In some cases, expedition cruises are the only way to explore a destination that is tricky or impossible to reach by land. For modern day explorers who want to adventure beyond the norm and see the most remote and far-flung corners of the world, the choice is easy – choose an expedition cruise.”

This week, CLIA travel agents and cruise operators are offering great deals to encourage more holidaymakers to explore the world of expedition cruising.
