Bookabach, New Zealand’s long-running holiday rental website, has today revealed the winners of its 2019 Bach of the Year Awards. A classic beachfront home in Whangarei Heads took out the top spot as this year’s recipient of the coveted Bach of the Year award, voted by the New Zealand public.

The Whangarei home epitomises a classic New Zealand bach; simple and understated with incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. It is also the perfect accommodation choice for families seeking an affordable and comfortable accommodation option. Set on over an acre of land, this family-friendly bach provides the space and privacy to relax. From swimming in the harbour to playing on the trampoline and swing set, the kids will be entertained for hours, while the adults can enjoy the incredible views of the sunset from the deck.

The annual Bach of the Year Awards recognise New Zealand’s best holiday baches across various categories and this year’s gold, silver and bronze winners were selected from a list of finalists by home renovation specialists and former The Block NZ winners, Alice and Caleb Pearson, and the Bookabach junior judge competition winner, Jayden Whitehead.

The gold winners across Family Friendly, Unique, Design and Pet-Friendly category were:

  • Design: First Light house Accommodation in Hawke’s Bay
  • Unique: The Cowshed  in Waikato
  • Pet Friendly: Mangawhai Bach in Mangawhai
  • Family Friendly: Hannah’s Bay Cottage in Rotorua

Out of the seven New Zealand regions home to the gold, silver and bronze properties, Northland really shone with four baches in the mix, taking out gold and silver medals in the Pet Friendly category as well as Bach of The Year. Wellington and Hawke’s Bay closely followed with two properties recognised, followed by one each for Waiheke Island, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Canterbury and Rotorua.

Simone Scoppa, Head of PR for Bookabach said: “The classic bach and simple accommodation with outstanding views has reigned king this year, trumping a lot of designer and architecturally magnificent homes in our annual Bach of the Year awards. The winner and all the medallists serve as the perfect source of inspiration for families wanting a last-minute getaway for the Labour Day long weekend, or those starting to book their accommodation for the summer holidays.”

Judges, Alice and Caleb Pearson, said of the judging process: “Reviewing these spectacular baches was certainly not a tough day in the office! The winning properties in each category showcase breathtaking interiors, unbelievable locations and many features that facilitate friends and families getting together and creating lifelong memories – which is exactly what we look for. Our holiday wish list has certainly grown throughout the judging process!”
