The BurJuman Arjaan by Rotana team recently joined with the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG) as part of the hotel’s commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. The team which was made up of upper management and colleagues from different profiles and departments headed out to the EMEG Ghantoot Nature Reserve in Jebel Ali for a Beach and Mangrove clean-up.

A fight close to the hotel’s heart and a main focus for its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, protecting the environment and supporting companies such as EMEG is an important step in trying to save our planet. EMEG is a voluntary, non-government organization (NGO) with a mission to preserve biodiversity in the UAE.

The first phase of the clean-up took place along the beach, where the team collected any non-biodegradable material that has been washed up along the shore. The pollution not only affects the environment but completely alters the delicate ecosystem and marine life. The team removed as much debris as possible and even put all their manpower in when removing a half sunk truck tire.

During the second phase, the team delved deep into the mangroves and collected the algae out of the water in order to enable the mangrove roots to breathe and keep growing. The algae will then be dried and used as a natural “sponge” to absorb oil spills in the ocean.

“These initiatives and collaborations are so important not only in order for the team and hotel to contribute to saving the environment but also are great learning tools where we can all pick up some pearls of wisdom and help create awareness of sustainability and environmental issues,” commented General Manager, Ulrike Andorff.
