Coca-Cola shines a light on Kings Cross for Vivid KX

As Vivid Sydney prepares to light up the city from 26 May to 17 June, Coca-Cola, the Precinct Contributor for Vivid KX, will use its iconic billboard to celebrate the character of Kings Cross and the local community.

As the original ‘gateway’ to Kings Cross, Coca-Cola’s iconic billboard will transform like never before in its 40+ year history, projecting powerful black-and-white portraits of the characters connected to the Kings Cross community will be displayed to celebrate a new era.

The billboard will also feature a continuous light show of vibrant colours and special effects for the full 23 nights of Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.

Coca-Cola South Pacific President, Roberto Mercade said “The Coca-Cola sign in Kings Cross has become part of the cultural fabric of the area and a landmark for one of the most vibrant parts of Sydney over the past four decades. What better way to show our support to Kings Cross and its wider community, than by transforming the sign for the first time in its 40+ year history for Vivid Sydney and Vivid KX.”

The initiative, Characters of Kings Cross, is designed to showcase the talent, colour, creativity and diversity of the Kings Cross precinct and has been created in collaboration with Australian-based portrait photographer, Katherine Williams.

Inspired by the coffee table book, Wayside and Katherine Williams’ 2015 photography exhibition, Humans of Kings Cross, the new image collection features artists, performers, Wayside Chapel visitors and volunteers, local retailers and restaurateurs from the colourful Kings Cross community; all of which will be projected from 40 meters across the road.

Also among the list of characters set to be profiled are some recognisable faces of the Kings Cross community including: The Edible Garden author and television presenter, Indira Naidoo; owner of Piccolo Bar and Cafe – a Kings Cross institution, Vittorio Bianchi; Rock Star, Jeff Duff, and many more.

This isn’t the first time Coca-Cola has partnered with The Wayside Chapel. In 2016 Coca-Cola handed its original 1974 Kings Cross sign to the people of Sydney by auctioning the letters and raising over $100,000 for The Wayside Chapel – a fellow Kings Cross icon.

Coca-Cola will also support a donation drive to support The Wayside Chapel’s Winter Appeal.

This is the first year that Kings Cross has been officially included as part of Vivid Sydney and Coca-Cola is the proud Kings Cross Precinct Contributor for 2017. The iconic Coca-Cola billboard will switch on Characters of Kings Cross as part of Vivid KX from Friday 26th May, through to Saturday 17th June, 2017.
