Cockpit smoke forces emergency landing on Qantas

egtmedia59A Qantas flight was diverted to Canberra Airport for an emergency landing yesterday after reporting smoke in the cockpit.

The pilot and co-pilot were taken to Canberra Hospital for assessment of possible smoke inhalation and were later discharged.

ABC News reported that 50 passengers, including a child, were safely evacuated from the plane on landing. The Canberra Times reported that ACT Fire & Rescue and ACT Ambulance Service Intensive Care paramedics attended the scene.

The paper quoted a Qantas spokeswoman saying that passengers disembarked via the stairs and none required medical attention.

A Canberra Airport spokeswoman said the plane landed normally in “textbook emergency procedure’ and all passengers were transferred to another onward flight.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and Qantas are investigating.

QantasLink, the Qantas regional brand, operates 16 Dash 8 Q300s and 28 Dash 8 Q400s. The Bombardier Dash 8 or Q-Series, previously known as the de Havilland Canada Dash 8 or DHC-8, is a series of twin-engined, medium range, turboprop airliners introduced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) in 1984 and now produced by Bombardier Aerospace.

A division of Bombardier Inc, Bombardier Aerospace is said to be the third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer in the world after Airbus and Boeing. It is headquartered in Dorval, Quebec, Canada.

Bombardier has built over 1000 Dash 8s of all models and forecasts a total production run of 1192 aircraft of all variants through to the end of 2016.
