Colorful Notes: A Celebration of African-American Music Appreciation Month in Arkansas

Throughout the month of June, Arkansas will celebrate African-American Music Appreciation Month as part of a national observance that was first inducted on June 7, 1979 by President Jimmy Carter. Arkansas Tourism will help Arkansans celebrate African- American Music Appreciation Month by providing information about African-American artists with deep Arkansas roots from the past, present, and future. Arkansans are encouraged to follow Arkansas Tourism social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube) to read exclusive interviews, watch videos, listen to music, and learn about upcoming special events. African-American Music Appreciation Month paves the way for a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the rich legacy of African-American music and history.

Virtually every genre of music has, in some way, been touched and influenced by African-Americans. Consequently, it’s fitting for African-American Music Appreciation Month to recognize and celebrate the historical influence African-Americans have had on the music industry and other artists. At its core, African-American Music Appreciation Month pays homage to the many artists, writers, songs and albums that have shaped American pop culture and highlights inspiring musical moments that have brought citizens of every race and ethnicity together.
