Come for the Asparagus, Stay for the History

July 9, 2016 Lifestyle No Comments Print Print Email Email

Nestled in the Darling Ranges in the beautiful Bickley Valley is a small family farm producing white asparagus and offering luxury cottage accommodation in one of the most picturesque landscapes in the outskirts of Perth.

This charming cottage was originally built by George Sydney Putland in 1914, who bought the land unseen from his home in London with the dream of setting up an orchard.

The Smeets family have now been growing white and green asparagus on the land surrounding the cottage for the last 30 years,

Wanting to share with people their beautiful location and the fascinating history of the cottage, Harrie and Petra Smeets lovingly restored the old cottage last year into a beautiful luxury getaway.

Surrounded by stunning scenery, boutique wineries and close to the historical village of Kalamunda, Bickley Valley Cottage provides a great setting for a much needed getaway.

While Harrie is in charge of organically farming the land, Petra is an incredible cook (especially when it comes to baking!). Petra creates everything form fresh bread, home-style jams, toasted muesli and her own yoghurt, making for a uniquely delicious breakfast basket.

Both are passionate about fresh and local produce, and there is definitely no shortage of great thing to be found in the Bickley Valley, form wonderful wines to fresh fruit and vegetables.

Bickley Valley Cottages won Best New Business in the Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce Awards in 2015.
