Kerry David and Diana Howie, two award–winning film and television producers and life–long conservationists, have announced the launch of OVER & ABOVE AFRICA, a ground–breaking online portal that aims to build a global base of viewers by offering a variety of content streams focused on the fight to end poaching.
Programming will include a news service produced exclusively by news giant ITN, wildlife drone footage, poaching enforcement programs, custom produced field reporting and more.
But Over & Above Africa’s most unique aspect is that a substantial percentage of profits from viewer subscription fees will be distributed to anti–poaching organizations hand selected by an advisory board of top international conservationists.
The idea for O&A came about after co–founder Kerry David took a 3 year sabbatical from producing films, working in Ghana to oversee the establishment of an orphanage for a non–profit. Working in Africa, David was never far from the realities of rampant poaching. “Diana and I realized technology has created a new opportunity for us to make a real difference on a global scale,” said Kerry. Co–founder Diana Howie added, “what makes O&A different is that some of the content our subscribers watch will be a direct result of their subscription fee being re–invested in the cause they care about. Viewers will literally be able to see their money hard at work helping to stop poaching.”
David and Howie have already attracted an impressive Board of Advisors that includes, Dereck & Beverly Joubert, conservationists, filmmakers, National Geographic Explorers–in–Residence; Steve Galster, co–founder WildAid and founder Freeland.org; Clarke Smith, Chairman, Nambiti Private Game Reserve; Alan Feldstein, Trustee, The Cheetah Conservation Fund and California Assemblywoman, Autumn Burke.
OVER & ABOVE AFRICA will focus on anti–poaching efforts, but the Over & Above model is scalable and designed to address other significant global threats. The success of the subscription video on demand model (Netflix, Hulu) has significantly disrupted the traditional broadcast industry and brings new opportunities. Engaging the global online audience creates a massive community of valuable subscribers who bring their passion and financial support to help solve major issues.
On July 23rd, 2016, Over & Above Africa will launch its initial crowd funding campaign on IndieGogo.com.
