A young New Zealander was killed and two of her companions were injured when a Contiki van carrying seven people to a surf beach in South Lombok crashed off a cliff.

The dead woman worked for Contiki, the Waikato Times in New Zealand reported.

Two other New Zealanders, an Australian, two Americans and the local driver were also reported to be in the van. New Zealand media reported that grieving family members had flown to Indonesia to bring home the body of Danielle Angus, 23.

Rescue workers worked for over an hour to free the trapped travellers from the wreckage.

Australian Harry Nguyen was hospitalised with injuries, report said, as were two other young New Zealanders and one of the Americans. The driver suffered only minor injuries and the other American has been released from hospital.

The Sunday Star-Times in New Zealand said the vehicle was travelling with a convoy of four vehicles on a surf school excursion organised by locals. The other vehicles were not involved and inquiries as to the cause of the crash are underway.
