Convict-built stables now open as accommodation at Old Bank Boutique Hotel Stay 2 nights on a weekend at midweek rates

Convicts built it as a butchery in the 1820s and it later served as stables behind a bank constructed in the 1890s but the historic structure has now begun a new lease of life as the latest, deluxe accommodation at Mittagong’s Old Bank Boutique Hotel in Mittagong in the NSW Southern Highlands.

‘The Stables’ is the eighth accommodation offering at the hotel which opened last September after a seven-year project to restore the grand, 125-year-old former bank building to its glory days. Dating back to the 1820s and nestled just behind the two-storey hotel, The Stables also offers the hotel’s first twin-bed accommodation and first fully accessible facilities.

The Stables once housed horses and carriages for the bank manager and his family and to reflect this heritage, the refurbished building features doors with split top and bottom sections that can be opened separately. The cottage also features historical photos and letters, a high pulley once used to haul hay inside, original, timber ceilings and convict-built bricks – including one on the verandah in which a convict has etched a heart into it for reasons guests are free to speculate on!

Old pipes, medicine bottles and other artefacts dating back to the 1800s were found during the restoration of The Stables and can be viewed on request at the hotel.

Modern touches in the easy-access Stables include two king single beds, separate sofa bed, fully-equipped kitchen and heated floor and towel racks in the bathroom. Though self-contained, The Stables comes with a complimentary, two-course country breakfast each day. Guests are also free to relax in the main building of the former bank which features open fires – perfect for a winter stay in the highlands – richly furnished library and lounge, grand cedar staircase, hand-carved wood panelling, individually designed rugs, polished floorboards and leather Chesterfields. Guests also enjoy free Wi-Fi.

Including breakfast, The Stables is available from $425 per couple midweek and $475 on weekends (FridaySaturday). But by staying two nights on the weekend, guests pay midweek rates, with the two-night weekend package available from $850 per couple including breakfast and a bonus, indulgent afternoon tea on day of arrival. The two-night package offers a saving of $100 on normal rates and is available until further notice.

Located at 83 Main St, Mittagong, the Old Bank Hotel is close to the Southern Highlands’ well-known antique shops, boutiques, bookshops, cafes and gardens.
