Cool activities to cosy up to this winter in Lake Macquarie

June 15, 2017 Destination Global No Comments Email Email

When the winter weather rolls in, the action in and around Lake Macquarie heats up, with a raft of cool-weather events and activities to entertain visitors of all ages.

Our top picks follow:

Rug up and light up your night @ Float Your Boat

On June 16 and 17 Lake Macquarie City Council is calling boat owners – or boat-owning visitors – to light up the lake in its inaugural Float Your Boat event. With more than $5000 in cash prizes on offer, the event will feature two flotilla parades following a course from Marmong Point Marina to Warners Bay, Eleebana and Valentine to Belmont on the first night, and then on the second night, from Marmong Point Marina to Toronto, Coal Point, Fishing Point and Wangi Wangi the following evening.

With boating fans encouraged to decorate their vessels – just like you would a house at Christmas time – to light up the lake, this is an inspired opportunity to display creativity and to…literally…light up the lake.

Prize categories include the People’s Choice Award, voted by the local community on social media.

Dust off your runners and warm up with the Rafferty’s Coastal Run

On Saturday 8th July, the renowned Rafferty’s Resort will host a series of trail runs – 11km, 22km and 35km – taking in some of the most spectacular scenery around Lake Macquarie, Munmorah State Conservation area and the stunning coastline around Catherine Hill Bay.

Beginning and ending at the resort, the trail snakes through the Wallarah National Park and offers diverse bushland terrain and beach terrain to excite and challenge trail runners of all persuasions.

To encourage families to participate, the resort is offering activities including a jumping castle, face painting, cinema, arts and crafts and giant grass games, as well as a ‘Kids Club’ service staffed by childcare professionals to allow parents an opportunity to join the run.

To load up before the run, participants and their families can enjoy a tasty buffet dinner on Friday night before the race. See www.raffertyscoastalrun.com.au for more information and to register online.

Beyond the run, the resort is offering fabulous mid-week accommodation deals, including $10 Tuesdays as part of any consecutive three-night package in a two or three-bedroom cottage or terrace – with one day being Tuesday.

Holiday Park heaven in Lake Macquarie

For those keen on outdoor action, there’s plenty to do – including outstanding bushwalking – at Lake Macquarie’s Holiday Parks, with wintry deals, such as a seven-night stay for the price of six (conditions apply), available at parks including Belmont Pines, Blacksmiths Beachside, Swansea Gardens and Wangi Point.

Winter dining on the lake

In times of cooler climes, dining on the lake takes on a magical quality, with heated outdoor areas, fresh winter menus and seasonal events aplenty. The iconic Salina is offering a new menu in its cosy heated courtyard, while Crusoe’s is also showcasing new winter fare, as well as hosting a fun Christmas in July event on the 28th.

 Cool-weather culture

Whatever the season, the Lake Macquarie Art Gallery is home to a raft of exhibitions and events. This winter, check out Water (May 5 – July 2), a series of historic and contemporary works centred around the essential liquid; Schools in Focus (May 5 – June 25), showcasing secondary school photography; iconic American artists Diane Arbus’ American Portraits, from July 1 to August 20; or ART SPACE, an interactive Sunday art session for young children.
