On the eve of what organisers hope will be the biggest ever weekend in the history of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads, the streets throughout the border towns are glistening with chrome and bursting at the seams with visitors.
The momentum has been building throughout the week as tens of thousands of visitors from around Australia and overseas, convoys of cars, international artists and over fifty rock’n’roll and rockabilly bands, have poured into the border towns.
Almost all accommodation houses are happily displaying ‘No Vacancy’ signs and many business owners are predicting Cooly Rocks On 2016 will be their biggest weekend ever.
Festival Manager Phil Villiers says there is no doubt this year’s festival has already brought a huge boost to local business and accommodation providers and with the busiest weekend of the festival almost here, things can only get better.
“People are already out and about, enjoying the music and showing off their cars. The vibe is all about fun and everybody is geared up, or frocked up, for their long awaited annual dose of ‘50s and ‘60s nostalgia, Cooly Rocks On-style,” said Phil.
Saturday’s Sharp Motor Group Street Parade is expected to stretch two kilometres and this year will travel along Griffith Street as well as Marine Parade, with more vantage points to catch the fun. The Sharp Motor Group Street Parade begins at 9.30am on Saturday June 11 from Musgrave Street at Kirra.
Park’n’Ride is suggested for this weekend’s Cooly Rocks On, with stations at Border Park Raceway, Appel Street, Kirra and Miles Street, Kirra ($3 per car) and PCYC in Florence Street, Tweed Heads ($5 per car). Park’n’Ride operates from 8am-6pm Sat 11 and Sun 12 June. Surfside Buses travel the length of the Gold Coast with a drop off point near the main Festival precinct.
