Copthorne Hotel Dubai observes Earth Hour

As the Earth Hour clock struck 8:30pm on Saturday night, Copthorne Hotel Dubai in Deira switched off lights and joined the entire nation in observing the biggest environmental event of the year.

The hotel team and many hotel guests gathered together at the lobby before 8:30pm where a symbolic switch had been placed and lit candles in the shape of 60+ Earth Hour.

General Manager Glenn Nobbs who led the ceremony turned off the symbolic switch at 8:30pm, which signaled the start of the 60-minute energy conservation. Non-essential lights and appliances were cut off for one hour in different areas of the hotel and also in rooms of guests who supported the event.

“Copthorne Hotel Dubai is committed to working towards a more sustainable future for residents and visitors. We join the entire nation and hundreds of millions of people around the world in our collective fight against climate change. There’s never been a more appropriate time to show our solidarity for the protection of our planet. We are pleased to see our guests who also supported this initiative and came to observe the most important event on energy conservation,” noted Nobbs.

In addition to the activities in the Hotel, the team also recognized Earth Hour in the Hotel Accommodation by shutting down non-essential power and lights in the 45-key building, running some edutainment with an environmental message to further educate the colleagues, and wrapped up the evening with an acoustic music session.

The Copthorne Hotel Dubai has water, energy, and solid waste reducing measures in place to help protect the environment in an ongoing basis. The hotel’s recycling program has recycled approximately 10.8 tons of waste in 2017 and its light bulb replacement project of replacing old bulbs with LEDs resulted in a reduction of power consumption by 347,464 KWh, and water consumption by 42,059 UK gallons in 2017.

The UAE has been celebrating Earth Hour since 2008. The UAE chapter of Earth Hour is led by the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) which introduced the landmark drive in 2007.

Known as the world’s largest movement for the environment, Earth Hour brings over 7,000 cities, as well as 180 countries and territories together annually, participating in a symbolic switching off of lights. This year’s theme is “Connect 2 Earth” which highlighted the importance of biodiversity as it declines at an unprecedented rate globally.

The Earth Hour initiative was one of the many events that Copthorne Hotel Dubai observed every year to raise awareness about environmental issues around the world. The team also participates in other annual community activities such as Beat Diabetes Walk and Clean Up UAE.
