Coral Expeditions, Australia’s pioneering cruise operator, announces anthropologist Dr Bruce Pohlmann as guest lecturer on the Sepik River Scouting Expeditions which depart in February 2018.

A well-respected Anthropologist and University of California alumni Dr Pohlmann will draw on his experience living, studying and working in New Guinea to take guests on a journey through the Sepik River’s fascinating cultures.

There is no better place on earth in which the study of Anthropology is quite so fulfilling as the region is home to an astonishing variety of cultures, speaking over 800 languages and each having unique traditions inspired by the river system, passed down through thousands of years. Under Dr Pohlmann’s expert guidance guests will be given a rewarding opportunity to learn about the interplay between culture, language and society across the Sepik’s past and present.

Dr Bruce Pohlmann comments, “For the anthropologist our job is to explain how the strange is familiar and the familiar is strange and whilst Papua New Guinea will be home to many unfamiliar sights, sounds and experiences for guests, they will be just as fascinated by some of the parallels with society back home.”

“Throughout the voyage there will be many cultural paradoxes to explore, and one which stands out for me is the co-existence of Christianity and magic, both with vibrant manifestations in different communities along the river. To return to this remote region is an absolute privilege and one I am delighted to share with Coral Expeditions’ adventurous guests.”

Combining the best of ocean and river expedition cruising, this seven-night immersive itinerary explores a wild and unspoilt land, and ventures where few have ventured before. Delving deeper into the heart of Papua New Guinea, the itinerary follows the course of the river further into the interior; passing through some of the oldest and densest rainforests in the world, encountering local tribes with rich cultures and traditions, and crossing paths with wildlife such as the famed Bird of Paradise.

Coral Expeditions’ Papua New Guinea Sepik River Scouting Expeditions depart weekly in February 2018. Prices start from $4,990 per person.
