CrossFit: The Perfect Way to Keep in Shape During the AFL Off-season

September 6, 2017 Sports No Comments Email Email

With the AFL Premiership season drawing closer to its end, some people start thinking about how they will maintain their fitness levels until it all kicks off again next year. Undoubtedly, there will be a few extra pies eaten or beverages consumed after a gruelling workload in the months prior but, eventually, we do have to get back on track to make sure the pain is not so severe when we start up again.

During the normal season, sustaining your fitness levels can be a lot easier than the off-season. Especially in a team sport such as AFL, where teammates will motivate and encourage you to keep pushing the boundaries and testing yourself. The social aspect is also a major factor and catching up with your mates at training can sometimes be the perfect end to a hard day at work.

When this all stops though, it can be hard to find the willpower to go at it alone; it’s also especially tough during the holiday season to organize regular training sessions with other players. That’s where the new craze sweeping across Australia comes in – CrossFit. It’s a mixture of weightlifting, power lifting, plyometrics, and callisthenics, combined with gymnastics, sprints, rowing, and a bunch of unconventional exercises such as rope climbing.

The workouts are short and extremely high intensity and use varied functional movements to target all muscle groups in your body. Unlike other types of strength training, CrossFit is all about how much you can do in the shortest time possible. The more power that your body outputs, the more intense the workout will be. By using these different methods that target all the body’s functional movements, CrossFit workouts lead to rapid gains in fitness levels.

With Aussie Rules requiring such a high level of both cardiovascular fitness as well as core strength, many players can find themselves spending hours in the gym. This means doing the same mundane exercises that they’ve been doing for years or lengthy cardio training that drags on forever. The beauty of these workouts is you get maximum results while outlaying a fraction of the time.

The Grand Final will soon be upon us on the 30th of September and, at this end of the season, you would imagine there will be some sore and exhausted bodies running around in the park. Minor Premiers the Adelaide Crows will know how important endurance and determination can be at this stage of the season, and a lot of these clubs are already using CrossFit techniques to enhance their stamina so they can maintain their peak performance levels for the duration of the season.

The Crows are the favourites for the title but, as fatigue and injury can play a major role in the outcome of games, the AFL remains unpredictable. Some bookies are running promotions right now on sports betting, such as Ladbrokes’ free $500 on a $500 deposit claimable via the Champion Bets website, a bonus that takes some of the difficulty out of betting on fluid contests like the Grand Final. Both Sydney teams will be breathing down their neck, after all.

So, when you think about what program you would like to use for this off-season, why not jump online and check out your local CrossFit gym or centre. You’re bound to meet like-minded people as well as get an extremely beneficial workout that will target every part of your body.
