Cruise passenger stabbed Valentine’s Day rapist with corkscrew

February 20, 2014 Cruise, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59A passenger aboard a famed cruise liner used a corkscrew to defend herself against a crazed rapist who leapt without warning into her cabin in the middle of the night on St Valentines Day and launched a vicious and frenzied assault, FBI agents have heard.

As well as stabbing her attacker with a corkscrew, the victim struck him on his exposed genitals as he raped, beat, punched and half strangled her in her darkened cabin, US federal agents were told.

The alleged attacker, a crewmember, is also accused of trying to hurl the woman from the balcony of her cabin into the ocean off the coast of Honduras. The victim fought desperately and bravely for her life and survived without going overboard. FIS-250x250

The ship was Holland America Line’s MS Nieuw Amsterdam. Ketut Pujayasa, 28, an Indonesian cabin steward aboard, has confessed to the assault, according to US federal authorities who questioned him. Pujayasa allegedly said he acted out of revenge because the victim had used insulting words earlier when he was bringing her breakfast in her cabin.

The victim, a 31-year-old American woman, said she passed out at least once while being attacked and she firmly believed her attacker was trying to kill her.

According to the Florida Sun Sentinel, Pujayasa claimed he heard a woman’s voice say, “Wait a minute, son of a bitch!” a day or two earlier, after he knocked three times  on her door while delivering a room service breakfast.

“Pujayasa stated that the passenger’s comment of ‘son of a bitch’ was offensive to himself and his parents,” FBI Special Agent David Nunez wrote in his report. “He was angry and upset the rest of the day.”

After brooding on the grievance, Pujayasa first wanted to locate the passenger and punch her in the face, agents said, but instead, when he was off duty, he allegedly used his master key to enter the woman’s cabin and lie in wait on the balcony.

The attack is then said to have begun, with Pujayasa springing from the balcony into the cabin and allegedly striking the victim with a laptop computer and a curling iron during a frenzied sexual assault.

Pujayasa allegedly told investigators he later crept, naked from the waist down, from the balcony and along the outside of the ship to break into another cabin via the balcony and make his escape into the interior of the ship.

When Pujayasa reached his crew cabin, he allegedly told his cabin-mate to contact ship security. He was swiftly detained. FBI agents arrested him when the vessel returned to Fort Lauderdale.

Agents have referred to surveillance images apparently showing a person clambering between balconies on the outside of the ship.

The female victim was evacuated by air ambulance to a hospital in South Florida and Holland America Line has arranged to fly her family to be with her.

Pujayasa has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated sexual abuse and taken to Broward County Jail in Florida, the Broward Palm Beach New Times reported yesterday.

Unsurprisingly, Holland America Line has fired Pujayasa.
