Two cruise ship passengers enjoying what was meant to be a pleasant shore excursion in a US mainland port ended up struggling with a masked gunman during an attempted robbery.
The port was New Orleans, Louisiana. The passengers, a man and a woman, were wandering back to their ship at about 11.30pm on popular Canal Street, the WDSU New Orleans news outlet reported.
Detectives said a man wearing dark-coloured clothing with a bandana over his face, carrying a semi-automatic weapon, stepped out suddenly and demanded the couple’s wallet and purse.
Showing incredible bravery – or possibly foolishness, depending on your point of view – the victims refused to hand over their property and got into a struggle with the gunman.
It worked! Instead of shooting them, the gunman decided to run away, fleeing in the opposite direction.
The passengers returned to their ship shaken but unharmed. Police are still searching for the gunman, described by the victims as a black male. The bandana made further identification impossible.
