Likened to New York’s Meatpacking District and NoHo, Sai Wan is an historic yet fashionable district in Hong Kong. Nestled in the heart of the neighbourhood is Eight South Lane, a brand new boutique residential project created with Bohemian Urbanites in mind.

Adrian Cheng, Cultural Entrepreneur – creator of the Bohemian Urbanites concept and mastermind behind the Eight South Lane projectHong Kong’s cultural entrepreneur Adrian Cheng is the mastermind behind the project, which is set to be the home for discerning global nomads with a love for the artisanal.

Located on Hong Kong’s famed harbour front, Sai Wan is just walking distance from Central yet retains a grassroots vibe that is now rarely found. This once quiet residential spot is now the place for the newest and hippest shops and restaurants in town. Full of local markets, quaint cafes, art galleries and unique shops, this budding neighbourhood is one of the most interesting locations on the island. The revitalisation of Sai Wan is complemented by the MTR West Island Line which is set to provide a convenient mode of transportation in the district upon completion in 2014.

Florent Nédélec, founder of Florent Nédélec Architecture

Adrian Cheng, Trustee of Royal Academy of Arts, Board Director of National Museum of China Foundation, Visiting Committee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and founder of the K11 Art Foundation, is a passionate advocate for arts, social development and cultural heritage conservation in Hong Kong and beyond. A visionary who is always a step ahead of the trend, Cheng recognises the unique potential of Sai Wan.

At Eight South Lane, Cheng creates the concept of “Bohemian Urbanites”, a term he coined that describes people who are trend sensitive and media literate with high aspirations.  The idea of Bohemian refers to people who lead an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with permanent ties, involving musical, artistic, or literary pursuits. They are a brilliant group of global nomads, mindful thinkers and creative captains of industry, all bound together by Bohemian overtones: a mutual appreciation for artistic and stylish living, the continuous pursuit of life’s truths and a general distaste for mainstream ephemera. “They are global nomads with a free spirit, cultured beings and collectors who love the artisanal. They are the urban elites, with a bohemian soul,” says Cheng.

Stewart Robertson, creative leader of BARstudioEight South Lane, the perfect new home for the Bohemian Urbanites, binds people together by Bohemian overtones, in which they collect, connect, collide and converge in their like-minded nature. It is committed to the purveyance of elegance, taste, beauty, engaging and exceptional living through collected objects and experiences. It is about a community of Bohemians sharing the finest things in life in a delightful manner. It is a modern interactive magazine, a playscape, a call to action to share all things of inspiration and uplifting. It is recognition of the value of those things in life which far exceed their cost. It is a joyful exploration of the priceless, tangible, intangible, enriching, engaging and emotionally affluent.

Cheng brings together the renowned design talents of Florent Nédélec and BARstudioboth of which have created stunning designs globally. The curtain wall of Eight South Lane is designed by Florent Nédélec Architecture, an international recognized architectural studio, providing superior design services for residential and commercial projects; whereas the Sky Clubhouse is designed by BARstudio, a boutique Melbourne-based design studio specializing in the design of high profile award-winning international hotel environments. “I believe that with the collaboration of Florent Nédélec and BARstudio, Eight South Lane will be a base for the community of Bohemian Urbanites,” Cheng said.

Eight South Lane’s stand-out design features include Nédélec’s ‘curtain wall’ façade, a grid system made from glass and white aluminum that gives a sleek and modern look, yet allows balconies to expand the interior into the exterior – with amazing views for residents. The Sky Clubhouse, designed by BARstudio, invites residents to the top, where a free spirited and cultured space awaits. Facilities include a pool table, a games room, a lounge, a library and a gym. The Sky Garden, an organic extension of the clubhouse, is a “living” leisure space surrounded by trees and green walls. There is an urban farm inviting residents to plant herbs and vegetables and an alfresco dining area with outdoor kitchen offering space for artisanal gastronomy.

By creating a home for the Bohemian Urbanites, the lifestyle of which is set to become the trendiest in town; Cheng envisages Sai Wan as a neighbourhood with a distinct personality – set to be the hippest cultural destination for the Bohemian Urbanites as well as those who admire the lifestyle of the new future.
