Cycling coup for the Margaret River Region

In a sporting coup for the South West of Western Australia, Satalyst Giant Racing’s (SGR) National Road Series cycling team has chosen the Margaret River Region as its preferred location for training as part of a new partnership with the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association (AMRTA).
The team will come to the Margaret River Region at least twice yearly, firstly for an Autumn training camp prior to the commencement of the National Road Series and secondly in Spring for a training camp prior to their participation in the Tour of Margaret River.

On tour, the elite team will act as ambassadors for the Margaret River Region, sporting the logo on its cycling jerseys and being photographed at some of the region’s iconic locations, to promote the region as a premier destination for cycling.

Additionally, the development team of younger riders will be referred to as the ‘Satalyst Margaret River’ racing team.

CEO of Cycling Eventures, Tour of Margaret River Event Director and local cycling advocate Brendon Morrison advised he was over the moon about the partnership with the AMRTA.

“The AMRTA’s support for this initiative is recognition of the significance of cyclo-tourism; people no longer travel just to stare out the window of a tour coach, they want to be amongst the scenery and a part of the action – and there is no better way to do that than on a bike,” said Mr Morrison.

“Moreover, the fact that the Margaret River Region has been selected as SGR’s preferred training ground is a significant step towards our long term objective of having a team representing the region in the grand tours of Europe, including the Tour de France,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of the AMRTA Pip Close advised that the organisation was delighted to support the growing collaboration between cycling and tourism in the region.

“Cycling and tourism go hand in hand – and this partnership with the SGR Racing Team will certainly help to raise the profile of the Margaret River Region as an exceptional cycling destination,” said Ms Close.

In 2014 in addition to attending 14 events on the East Coast as a part of the National Road Series, the teams have also received invitations to international tours in Thailand, the Philippines and in New Zealand.

Mr Morrison advised that an informal function would be held at a local vineyard to welcome the team to the region.

“The welcome function on March 22nd is open to the public – there will be a barbeque and wine tasting, and anyone with an interest in cycling or cyclo-tourism is encouraged to attend!” he said.
