An initial Dalmatian departure sold out within weeks of its recent announcement as the newest destination in the Peter Sommer Travels selection of tours and gulet cruises. A second Cruising the Coast of Dalmatia will now begin onSeptember 24, 2016, travelling aboard a traditional wooden gulet to explore the ancient towns, intricate coastline and ruggedly beautiful islands of Croatia.

The region has played host to a succession of peoples and empires over several millennia – from Dalmatian and Illyrian tribesmen to Greek colonists, Roman and Byzantine soldiers and emperors, Croat warriors, Venetian traders, Ottoman and Italian fleets and French and Austro-Hungarian governors. Each has left behind a unique cultural heritage, presented with the help of expert guide and enthusiast, Dr Helena Tomas, Professor of Archaeology at Zagreb University.

Beginning in the renowned city of Dubrovnik, the expedition offers a chance to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its famous walls, grand promenades and tangle of terracotta rooftops overlooking the Adriatic.

It then sets out into the Adriatic to visit islands including Korčula with its picture-perfect township tightly arranged upon a narrow headland. Heading west, guests explore the delightful island of Vis to taste wines that have been produced locally since the 4th Century BC and to visit its wonderful archaeological museum.

The journey then heads to stunning Hvar, once the ancient Greek colony of Pharos and later an important stronghold of the Venetian empire. Next, the gulet cruises north to beautiful Brač, known for its magnificent stone and long history of stonemasonry used everywhere from Roman palaces to the White House.

After numerous opportunities to swim, snorkel or kayak in turquoise bays and explore secluded coves and coastlines, the journey ends in Split, with a visit to the exceptionally well-preserved palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Croatia becomes the fourth country to join the Peter Sommer Travels selection of cultural and archaeological tours, alongside Turkey, Greece and Italy.  Recently named ‘Tour Operator of the Year’ by Britain’s Association of Independent Tour Operators, the company offers more than 20 different expert-led land tours and gulet cruises among the ancient sites of the Mediterranean.

The second departure of Cruising the Coast of Dalmatia will operate from Saturday September 24 to Saturday October 1, 2016, and is priced from £2795* per person twin share (approx A$5150).
