Deal-driven Aussies missing out on significant travel savings

August 6, 2014 OTA News No Comments Email Email

Australia is renowned for being a nation of savvy travellers, yet research from Expedia’s Out There study reveals an astounding 81 per cent of Aussies may be missing out on possible triple-digit savings when booking their travel.

While just over half of Aussie travellers (53%) save for their entire holiday in advance, the remainder rely on credit to pay for a portion of their holiday. In fact, one in ten pay for their entire holiday on credit, so finding ways to help holiday funds stretch further is becoming a hot topic for holiday makers.

Expedia travel expert Louise Crompton advises travellers looking to save money on their next holiday to book their flights and accommodation together.

“Aussies love to travel and finding a good deal to enable us to fulfil this passion is key. By booking flights and accommodation together, Aussies can save hundreds of dollars.”

However, the Out There study found fewer than one in five (19%) book their flights and accommodation together.

Aussies aged 65+ are making the most of the savings that can be made by booking flights and accommodation at the same time, with (43%) purchasing holiday bundles. On the other hand, the vast majority of 25-34 year olds (90%) still book travel and accommodation separately.

Crompton says it’s surprising more Aussies aren’t seizing the opportunity to make valuable savings on their travel.

“It’s so convenient to book a holiday bundle and the savings on popular destinations like Fiji, Bali and Hawaii can be huge. With the bulk of Aussies’ holiday budget going to flights and accommodation, having some extra cash to put towards dining out, a shopping spree or trying a new activity is a big bonus.”

Where to find the best bundled deals*:
