Death of girl on river rapids ride evokes Aussie tragedy

Theme park mechanical water rides are under a new cloud following the death of an 11-year-old girl in England.

The accident took place on the Splash Canyon ride at Drayton Manor, a family-owned park in Staffordshire.

The dead girl, a student visiting the park as part of a school trip, was airlifted to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

ABC News pointed out the similarity of the Splash Canon ride to Dreamworld’s Thunder River Rapids ride, now decommissioned after four people were killed when their raft flipped and trapped them in a conveyor belt.
The Australian accident last year led to the ride being permanently closed and dismantled.

Drayton Manor has closed its Splash Canyon ride following the accident, which is still being investigated.
