The death has been reported of Mike Ness, deputy chairman of The Travel Corporation and the group’s former president and joint chief executive.
Ness was reported to have died on Saturday morning following an earlier heart attack.
Ness was a travel industry byword, involved in the industry for about 45 years and responsible for the growth of Trafalgar Tours from a small European operator to the world’s largest coach tour operator.
He was actively involved in its expansion, including the purchase of Contiki Holidays, Insight Vacations, Creative Holidays, New Horizons and Evan Evans, which led to the formation of The Travel Corporation as well as some subsidiaries.
The Travel Corporation currently has operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, Germany, China, Singapore, Switzerland, Greece, France, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. The Group’s brands include Trafalgar Tours, Insight Vacations, Contiki Tours, Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, Red Carnation Hotels, AAT Kings, Creative Holidays, Brendan Vacations, New Horizons, Grand European Travel, African Travel, Lion World, Busabout, Aussie Adventure, Haggis, Shamrocker Adventures, Inspiring Journeys and Evan Evans Tours.
