Death toll rises in Manila hotel and casino fire

March 21, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

The death toll from a fire that raged through the Manila Pavilion Hotel and Casino at the weekend rose to five yesterday after firefighters discovered two more bodies – reportedly those of two security camera operators in the casino.

The fire blazed throughout Sunday and into Monday. Foreign tourists were among more than 300 hotel guests and workers evacuated, with a helicopter being used to pluck people from higher floors.

A woman was in critical condition in hospital yesterday. Authorities said they had accounted for all other guests and hotel workers.

Investigators are probing the wreckage to determine whether the fire started in the casino or in a mezzanine area that was being renovated.

The hotel lies in Manila’s Ermita tourist and commercial district.
