Nestled in the north-eastern corner of Thailand, Loei province hosts a very unique event, the Phi Ta Khon Festival or commonly known as the ‘Ghost Festival’.
The celebration originates from Buddhist beliefs of the coming together of the dead and living. A three-day long celebration which takes place in the town of Dansai, begins with residents gathering on the streets for a grand procession adorned with massive colourful masks carved from coconut-tree trunks and extravagant costumes portraying ‘ghosts’, dancing and frolicking. The spirits are worshiped during this festival; naming them the protectors of the village. The second day sees the Rocket Festival, where homemade rockets or ‘Bang Fai’ are sent out to the skies, in hopes of producing plentiful rainfall. On the third day, guests and participants are welcomed to join and receive blessings from Buddhist monks.
