Desperate smoker tries to step out of plane for cigarette

July 9, 2013 Aviation, Headline News No Comments Email Email

egtmedia59An airline passenger was so desperate for a cigarette in flight that he ended up causing two flight diversions on different aircraft in less than 12 hours, both while trying to open the cabin door to step out for a smoke.

Astonishingly, it seems that the man got off scot-free, despite the double dose of disruption he caused. He was not detained after the first occasion – so he went on to pull the same stunt on another flight. Both times, the man tried to light a cigarette inside the plane first, before heading for the emergency exit and attempting to wrench open the 250x250door.

The first disruption happened on an overnight US Airways flight from Las Vegas to Charlotte, North Carolina. That flight was forced to land in Albuquerque.

Local television channel KCTV reported that the man became increasingly twitchy, shaking the seat in front of him before trying to light cigarettes, and then heading for the door.

The man was released without charges after the first incident, the Daily Mail reported, because he had not managed to actually open the cabin door (hardly surprising, as it is impossible while in flight).

Following his release, the man, who spoke with a Russian accent reportedly, re-booked on a flight to Chicago with another airline and repeated his behaviour, trying to light cigarettes and becoming obnoxious and belligerent in the process.

That time, several passengers helped an off-duty federal agent to restrain the man as  the flight was diverted to Kansas City, where he was offloaded.

Here’s where it gets really weird: reports say that after the man was yet again interviewed by authorities, this time in Kansas City – he was again released without charges.
