Holiday-makers and travellers are being urged to not write-off Kaikōura as a destination during the coming summer holidays.
Destination Kaikōura General Manager Glenn Orsmby says while just a few businesses and tour operators are open for business at present, he is confident most will be open for customers in the coming weeks.
“We hope to have the inland road from Christchurch open by next week, which will allow the resumption of road travel between Christchurch and Kaikōura, adding just an hour to the journey.
“We already have some businesses operational, and we expect this number to continue to increase in the days and weeks ahead, in line with repairs to key infrastructure.”
Mr Ormsby says the people of the region have been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement they have received from across the country and the world.
“We are a resilient town and we have been encouraged by the offers of help and words of support. It has also been wonderful to see the community pull together to help each other out, and to support those who have been hardest hit, as well as our visitors.”
He has a message for those who have asked what they can do to help.
“I would like to urge them to lock in Kaikōura as a destination to come and visit in the months ahead when we are back and open for business. Support us with your custom and allow us to give back through the world-famous hospitality and attractions we are renowned for.
“I would also like to encourage those who have existing bookings to give us some time before cancelling as we may be still able to provide the experience you have booked, by the time it falls due.”
Mr Ormsby says while the region has taken a hit, good progress is being made to get it back on its feet.
