DFA Awards 2017 Celebrating design excellence across the region

This year’s DFA Awards presentation ceremonies saw the region’s greatest design talents awarded with applause on 6 and 8 December. On 6 December, over 200 design talents were awarded with the DFA Design for Asia Awards and the DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award. The ceremonies culminated with the Business of Design Week (BODW) Gala Dinner on 8 December, where Yohji Yamamoto received the DFA Lifetime Achievement AwardAdrian Zecha received the DFA Design Leadership Award and Alan Chan received the award for DFA World’s Outstanding Chinese Designer.

The DFA Awards have become one of the most prestigious and important awards in the design industry in Asia, if not the whole world. It cements Asia’s role as the world’s most important economic region for the design centric industry and has further underpinned Hong Kong as the creative hub in the Asia,” said Professor Eric Yim JP, Chairman of Hong Kong Design Centre.

Everyone from design giants to business leaders to government officials from around the world were in attendance, celebrating great design and exchanging knowledge of their respective fields. Industry leaders and influential individuals, such as Dr. Bernard Chan JP, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, HKSAR Government, David Lo, Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Design Centre, Freeman Lau, member of Board of Directors of Hong Kong Design Centre, Paul Noritaka Tange, Chairman of TANGE ASSOCIATES, famous Japanese architect, Julia Chiu, Global Design Strategist & Professor of Musashino Art University, and Massimo Giacon, Italian artist, designer, comic maker and illustrator were the guests presenting awards during the ceremony on 6 December.

In line with the key objectives of DFA Awards, to raise awareness of excellent design for improving quality of life and inspiring future design development, DFA: Design for Asia at BODW Summit was held on 7 December at HKCEC to engage the public. The DFA Design for Asia Awards 2017 winner Mark Dytham, co-founder of Klein Dytham architecture, talked about the winning project, Open House at Central Embassy, illustrating the urbanovation of retail space as a new solution to a mega city like Bangkok and its influence on Asia. The other winner, Daan Roosegaarde, founder of Studio Roosegaarde, discussed his winning project, Smog Free Project and how it combats the air pollution issue in Mainland China. Other speakers included Tse Yat Ming, industrial designer of Mobike, Pichit Virankabutra, creative space development director of Thailand Creative & Design Center and Wan Li, postdoctoral fellow in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Wining project: Post-earthquake reconstruction demonstration project of Guangming Village).

Together with BODW, the week-long events included the DFA Awards Exhibition at the HKDC Pavilion in DesignInspire where the winning projects, products and portfolios were showcased at the 3-day international exhibition about creativity to stage an exchange and inspiring platform for global creative elites, design brands, design associations and institutes to display their creativities.

To celebrate design excellence, the Awards publication Design for Asia: DFA Awards 2017 (ISBN: 978-988-13863-3-5) is published elaborating the design philosophy behind each winning project and also the portfolios of the winners. In addition, the international panel of judges also shared their views and comments on some of the winning projects. The publication is available for sale at a promotional price of HK$380 through HKDC.

Up and coming in 2018

DFA Pop-up Store

To engage the distinctive designs with the community and public, HKDC will collaborate with the avant-garde lifestyle shop, Kapok in Wan Chai, Hong Kong to set up a DFA Pop-up Store in the second quarter of 2018. Selected winning products of DFA Design for Asia Awards 2014-2017 will be available for sale.

DFA Awards 2018 Submission

The submission for DFA Design for Asia Awards and DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award, will be open in April 2018. More details to be announced.
