Brisbane’s first eco tourism safari company, safariFRANK, is offering keen adventurers in Byron Bay, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Sydney a chance to hear tales straight from southern Africa.
safariFRANK’s adventurers Frank and Gesa will share their recent experience of exploring the African wild. After initially meeting at guide school in South Africa, the couple have travelled extensively through Botswana, Namibia and Zambia.
Tales of an African road trip gives intrepid travellers, photographers and filmmakers the opportunity to pick the brains of some of the adventure industry’s best.
Frank has grew up travelling through the “real” Africa, getting off track and into the bush wherever he could. This love of the bush was the spark that set father Johan Steenhuisen on the path to launch safariFRANK last month., After attending guiding school in South Africa, Frank brings an extensive knowledg of animals, the bush and Africa.
Gesa has taken a different route to the wild. Growing up in Germany, she worked in the media as a writer and producer before taking the plunge to leave the industry and enrol in guide school in South Africa, where she met Frank. Since then she has created films about Africa and written a book about her experiences.
Byron Bay local, Craig, has a track record of capturing amazing images of wildlife. The self-taught photographer has produced some of the most notable nature and wildlife images over the last 5 years winning “international landscape photo of the year” and “underwater photograph of the year” in 2014.
safariFRANK is a family-owned ecotourism venture with a twist. The company develops unique adventures for small groups specifically based on their interests – from fully guided safaris, walking, cycling, kayaking and horse riding safaris to photography tours – with a strong focus on low-impact tourism, sustainability and conservation education.
While the company has only recently launched, the team behind it has been travelling to southern Africa for more than 20 years. Johan and Welna Steenhuisen moved from South Africa to Australia with their son Frank and daughter Karin in 2005 and have been organising adventures for their colleagues, friends and family since.
The idea behind safariFRANK started to take shape when Johan and Welna’s son, Frank, decided to become a full-time nature guide. This and the family’s love of the wild and Africa put the cogs in motion to launch safariFRANK.
