Dilmah Announces Hong Kong Cricket Club as Runner up in the World’s First Real High Tea Global Challenge
Dilmah is proud to announce the Hong Kong Cricket Club as runner up in the 2015 Real High Tea Global Challenge.
The global finals took place earlier this month at the Hilton Colombo Residences in Sri Lanka and marked the first ever global expansion of the brand’s famous Real High Tea Challenge. Competing against 21 teams from 14 countries, the Hong Kong Cricket Club presented a creative and clever Real High Tea inspired by the celebration of Hong Kong’s return to China after 150 years. The table setting included the country flags as well as elements representing present day Hong Kong. The favourite course of all the judges was the finale – Apple Welsh Cakes paired with Nuwara Eliya Afternoon Tea, in honour of the Welsh guard – the last official army to live in Hong Kong. To applaud this, the Bernd Uber Judge’s Award was awarded to the Hong Kong Cricket Club.
Other participating teams from Hong Kong and Macau include Island Shangri-La and MGM Macau. Island Shangri-La Hong Kong carried home the award for ‘The Most Passionate Performance’ in recognition of the most tea-inspired presentation defined by enthusiasm, spirit and respect for tea in an engaging style. The award for ‘The Most Tea-Inspired Table Layout’ was won by MGM Macau for their outgoing creativity displayed in their table setting.
The Global Champion, the Museum Art Hotel New Zealand was awarded first place in recognition of excellence in the appreciation of tea, tea inspired gastronomy and mixology. Featuring the theme ‘The Meeting of the Senses’, their entries, The Dilmah Chamomile Tea spray and the chilled peppermint tea infused o’shibori, refreshed the judges and set the mood to truly enjoy the high tea in a relaxed environment.
Café Turri from Chile was placed third overall for their innovative and culturally diverse high tea presentation of which their Dilmah Earl Grey Beer was the highlight of the day.
The Dilmah Real High Tea Challenge commenced with the desire to offer tea to a new generation – tea with style, substance and natural goodness. Stirring up the world of tea, it offers the world tea like it has never experienced before. A combination of sophisticated cuisine, brilliant mixology, elegant presentation, culinary theatre and personal stories of tea – all built around respect for tea, the Dilmah Real High Tea Global Challenge offers much more than the indulgence of the luxury of real tea.

Judge Peter Kuruvita, Award winning Chef and Restauranteur states, “The contestants have changed the way we think about tea forever. What we have got now is not only the new dishes that the contestants have created, but dishes that we have to think about. Throughout the Global Real High Tea Challenge we were very impressed and inspired to see the creation of real dishes that could go on any menu, anywhere in the world.”
