DMCs key to tailor-made growth at Travel Counsellors

Travel Counsellors have reported a significant increase in sales through Destination Management Companies, with year on year revenue up 90% in this area of the business.So far this year the company’s Travel Counsellors have made over 1,200 bespoke bookings with DMCs compared to 400 throughout 2016. The company believes the increase and popularity of using DMCs is reflective of the continued demand for bespoke, tailor-made travel through its in-house booking system, which now accounts for nearly 40% of sales made by its Travel Counsellors.

To support the growing trend the company is continually working to expand the number of DMC suppliers for its Travel Counsellors, as UK CCO Kirsten Hughes announced further partnerships with DMCs in North America, Greece and Cuba.

Kirsten Hughes comments; “Our Travel Counsellors build their businesses through delivering a truly bespoke and personal service to their customers, and the service that a DMC provides parallels this. Our Travel Counsellors have direct relationships with our DMCs on the ground around the world and know that their customers will always be looked after in a personal way, and will be on hand should anything happen whilst the customer is away. The Travel Counsellor is booking what is right for the customer, is in control of that booking by working directly with experts on the ground and is also in control of the margin they make.”

To continue its focus on this area of the business, this month the company launched its first DMC Takeover Day to hear directly from six of its largest DMC partners about the product and service they offer. The day also included a special broadcast from the company’s in-house TV studio so that it’s Travel Counsellors globally, of which there are now over 1,600, could also learn more about the benefits of using these companies and were given the opportunity to give feedback and ask questions live.

Queensland based Travel Counsellor Liz van-Boxel watched the broadcast and commented; “I use DMC’s for about 25% of my business – they enable me to give completely bespoke itineraries for my clients whilst being in complete control of the entire process, safe in the knowledge that my clients will have a wonderful experience from people on the ground who know that country inside out.”

Hughes adds; “As a business we are committed to investing in the technology and talent to enable our Travel Counsellors to reflect care in everything they do, which includes the product they sell and systems they use to do this. We are constantly developing and improving Phenix, having invested $2.8million in the system over the past 12 months, and have plans to further increase the support and destination knowledge in our commercial team too.”
