As if you need more of a reason to visit this lavish castle in the rolling Cognac countryside. The castle is reminiscent of a French fairytale with its turrets and towers, meadows and mills. The 11th century chateau has been restored to house a library stacked by Mayfair booksellers, Heywood Hill, a lush spa and a private collection of art all spread across 2500 acres.

Of course there’s a lake or seven to row or paddle upon and a forest for any budding red riding hoods to explore. Wildlife includes herons and otters and deer and cows. Yet feel safe knowing there are no wolves or bears that are about to spring to life and steal your porridge or your picnic basket.

Individual buildings dot this storybook landscape and offer a wellness area and a Michelin star restaurant named Dyades. The spa, the Moulin des Etangs produces nut oil and uses plants from its garden in part of the treatments offered including body scrubs and footbaths.

Did we mention the tennis court and the two huge heated pools: one in the grounds (open from May to October) and another indoors by the Roman baths.

Tipplers can rejoice because not only are you in Henessy, Martell and Remy Martin country, you’re just a ninety minute drive from Bordeaux.
