The latest Consumer Purchasing Priorities Survey reveals that Australians plan more domestic getaways than international holidays, with 73% taking a trip in the past year. TheGold Coast (18%), Melbourne (15%) and Adelaide (14%) are the top three domestic destinations, with sightseeing (29%), shopping (17%) and visiting family members (13%) being the most popular holiday activities.

Interestingly, the research reveals that the nostalgic family road trips are not dead, with nearly half of all Australians surveyed preferring to travel with family members on a domestic getaway.

The latest edition of the Mastercard Consumer Purchasing Priorities Survey also reveals:

–         What Aussie travellers spend most on: Accommodation (27%), mode of transport to a destination (25%) and eating out (16%)

–         How much spent on domestic holidays: $1,375,50
