“Don’t abandon us” – Blue Mountains tourism operators plead as recovery plans begin

October 25, 2013 Destination Global No Comments Email Email
The valiant work of fire-fighters across the Blue Mountains will help the region’s hotels get back to normal operations quicker than had earlier been expected.
With the emergency situation downgraded, roads re-opened, and a milder, more settled weather forecast in place for the next week, hoteliers are now returning to full operations, with all staff able to get to work.
Leading Blue Mountains hotel, the Fairmont Resort MGallery in Leura, was fortunate not to be directly affected by the fires, with the whole Leura bushland area escaping untouched, but General Manager Bernie Boller said the hotel had lost leisure and conference business because of the disruption caused by fires elsewhere in the region.
“The Fairmont was a considerable distance from the fires, but we did our best to support the efforts of the fire-fighters, providing two pallets of ration packs to the Katoomba Emergency Control Centre and catering for up to 250 SES volunteers for lunch and dinner. They did a remarkable job and the whole Blue Mountains community owes the volunteers and professional fire-fighters the highest level of gratitude for their selfless and brave efforts.
“It’s now very important that tourists and conference groups support the area in its recovery phase by maintaining their travel plans over the next few months. The reality is that if you look out from the Fairmont today you wouldn’t know anything had happened – there’s clear blue sky, untouched bush as far as the eye can see, and a fully staffed hotel waiting to provide that warm, genuine Blue Mountains hospitality. If people are wondering how they can support the Blue Mountains the answer is quite simple – come up and enjoy yourselves up here. It’s a win-win for everyone.
“My simple message is ‘don’t abandon the Blue Mountains – this is the time we need you the most.’”
