CEO of schoolies.com, Matt Lloyd, said it was compulsory that all Schoolies booking overseas holidays with the company took out travel insurance.
“Medical bills in overseas countries can set you back thousands and thousands of dollars,’’ Mr Lloyd said. “It’s the furthest thing on your mind when you’re on holidays but accidents can happen and it is essential that you are adequately covered,’’ he said.
Schoolies.com provides overseas schoolies holidays to Fiji and Bali where customers can either arrange their insurance direct with the company or else provide proof that they have arranged their own adequate coverage prior to travel.
Mr Lloyd said it was highly recommended that Schoolies took out travel insurance when travelling within Australia as well.
“Travel insurance is highly recommended whenever you travel away from home, regardless of whether it’s 2km or 25,000km.
“Of course we hope nobody encounters any troubles whilst on holidays but unexpected events can occur and accidents do happen that may prevent people from travelling or require them to return home early.
“From our experience over many years of organising Schoolies holidays examples of troubles that may arise include severe weather that closes roads to accommodation, transport strikes affecting flights, bags that go missing on flights or public transport and lost cameras or mobiles,’’ Mr Lloyd said.
