Dramatic footage and chat as luxury hits cement

February 22, 2017 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Dramatic footage – complete with entertaining local commentary by the person taking the clip – has emerged showing the collision between the new ultra-luxury ship Seabourn Encore and a cement-carrying vessel in a New Zealand port.

The gleaming Seabourn Encore, a 600-passenger ship launched only last month, broke its moorings in high winds a week ago in the South Island port of Timaru.

Seabourn Encore was unable to leave port as scheduled following the impact but was later cleared to sail on.

This clip, which has just emerged, shows the whole incident, complete with commentary by locals:

“Oh this is not good!”

“It’s going to hit that Milburn!”

“Oh my God!”

“Look at the gangplank!”

And finally, after the impact:

“They’re not having much luck with cruise ships around New Zealand at the moment…”

After the Seabourn Encore’s stern moorings snapped with a sound like gunshots, bystanders gathered to watch the drama. The ship, the fourth ultra-luxury vessel to join the Seabourn fleet, drifted and slammed into the cement carrier Milburn Carrier II, registered in the port of Lyttelton, near Christchurch.

No-one was hurt in the collision.
