People can be united no matter where they are in the world and a dinner in Sydney will not only unite but celebrate the successes of former alumni from one of South Africa’s nine provinces: KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). https://www.pata.org/portfolio/pas-2016/

Known as the KZN Ebandla Reunion Dinner, Ebandla means ‘Council of the Wise’ and is based on the ancient Zulu custom of the elders sitting together and discussing issues of community interest and similar occasions have been celebrated in London, New York and Dubai.

Ebandla is global initiative of KwaZulu-Natal former Premier, Sibusiso Ndebele, now South Africa’s High Commissioner to Australia, who is co-hosting the event with the visiting Mayor of Ethekwini Municpality in Durban, Councillor James Nxumalo.

The Sydney dinner is part of a collaboration between the African Renaissance, a non-profit organisation, the Sharks Rugby franchise, and the City of Durban, official tourism partner of the Sharks, and the South African High Commission in Australia and is supported by South African Airways who have donated two airfares as part of a travel and accommodation package to Durban.

The African Renaissance organisation’s goals include promoting the development of Africa and its people. The KZN Ebandla Campaign was launched in 2005 by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, as part of its African Renaissance initiative.

The Sharks brand is recognised world-wide and supported by a competitive rugby playing team which reaches almost four million fans across all races. The dinner will be attended by prominent Cell C Sharks rugby players, led by the most capped Springbok Captain, World Cup winner and current CEO of The Sharks, John Smit.

The eThekwini Municipality, centered on the city of Durban, is widely acknowledged as one of South Africa’s best run metropolitan-level local authorities.

According to Mayor James Nxumalo, “eThekwini has long enjoyed the reputation for being at the forefront of change, change for the betterment of our environment and improved quality of life for our citizens.”

“The City has recognised that innovation is key to progress and economic growth.  A large number of flagship projects are active across the City ranging from manufacturing, construction, real estate, tourism, information communication technology, agriculture, maritime and to logistics.

Recent flagship projects in the province include the King Shaka International Airport and Dube TradePort, constructed north of the city. Current strategy proposes that an aerotropolis is developed at the site.”

“As a globally connected city and an attractive tourist destination, Durban will also play host to the Commonwealth Games in 2022.”

The KZN Ebandla campaign is aimed at engaging with South Africans, and particularly those from KwaZulu-Natal, now living abroad. The goal of the campaign is to share new developments, investment opportunities, promotion of tourism, schooling, conferences and exhibitions, and other areas of interest.  The involvement of province’s successful alumni may be crucial to KZN’s ongoing success story as a key component of the South African economy.
