Dutch girl, 14, arrested over airline Twitter bomb prank

April 17, 2014 Aviation, Headline News 3 Comments Email Email

egtmedia59A 14-year-old Dutch girl has reportedly been arrested in the Netherlands for posting a Twitter threat against a major international airline.

The tweet from Sarah, also known by the Twitter handle @QueenDemetriax, said: “@americanAir hello my name’s Ibrahim and I’m from Afghanistan. I’m part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I’m gonna do something really big bye”. unnamed (1)

Responding swiftly, American Airlines tweeted in response: “@queendemetriax_ Sarah, we take these threats very seriously. Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI.”

The exchange, pictured by Holland’s De Telegraaf newspaper and shown here, provides a graphic image of the strange world of Twitter.

Britain’s Independent newspaper, describing the exchange, said that American Ailrines had lost no time and had posted its response just six minutes after receiving the threat from Sarah.

Why American would want to broadcast it to the world is another matter.

@AmericanAir has more than 800,000 Twitter followers and the exchange was picked up instantly, only to be followed by several desperate messages from Sarah expressing her regret.

Among them:: “omfg I was kidding”… “I’m so sorry I’m scared now”… “I was joking and it was my friend not me, take her IP address not mine”… “and I’m not from Afghanistan”, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Later, teenage Twitter users became upset at reports of Sarah’s arrest. “What if she was just joking and didn’t think @AmericanAir would see her?” wrote one.

The latest on the subject, according to a Washington Post blog item, is that dozens of teenagers have started posting bomb threats against American Airlines on Twitter, presumably as some sort of misguided protest. The FBI will be busy.

You do the crime, you do the time. What would happen if an Aussie teenager do the same thing?

  2. Ken Buzza says:

It’s time some of these teenagers grew up and started to act with some degree of responsibility. Parents have lost the plot because these stupid kids have “Rights”. The day that we stopped to discipline our children, started an epedemic.!!

  3. This has led to a lot of controversy. The Americans are clearly very strict about this. But many people said she was just a teenager who made a stupid mistake. I wonder if she is going to face the court.
