Maintaining a sustainable and healthy lifestyle was the emphasis of Eco Wellness Expos hosted by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) for its employees, contractors and consultants yesterday and today at O’Hare and Midway International Airports.unnamed The events, which were conveniently located at the worksites of airport employees, featured fitness and yoga classes, healthy cooking demonstrations and dozens of exhibitors offering ideas, information, and food and snack samples that contribute to living a healthy life.

The expo at Midway was held on April 21 at the Airport Maintenance Complex and included 12 exhibitors. The event at O’Hare was held today, Earth Day, at the Aviation Administration Building and featured 21 exhibitors. Many employees were able to exercise, practice yoga, have their blood pressure checked, meet with exhibitors and sample delicious, healthy entrees and snacks without having to leave their work locations.

Aviation employees were also able to earn points toward the Chicago Lives Healthy program by attending the expo and meeting with exhibitors. A full list of participating exhibitors is below.

The CDA’s Eco Wellness Expos align with Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s initiative to encourage City of Chicago employees to maintain a healthy lifestyle and be responsible stewards of the natural environment.

Promoting employee health and wellness contributes to a better, more productive workforce and helps reduce healthcare expenses for employers. The CDA has held annual health and wellness fairs for its employees at the airports since the beginning of Mayor Emanuel’s administration in 2011. This was the first time the events were held in connection with Earth Day.

Sustainability is a top priority for the CDA. The CDA’s commitment to going green is reflected through a variety of programs and initiatives at Chicago’s airports, which include industry-leading sustainable design and construction practices, eco-friendly airport restaurants and shops, the first and largest apiary (beehive farm) on airport property in the U.S. at O’Hare, and a now famous herd of grazing animals tasked with managing vegetation on the airfield. The commitment is further demonstrated in the CDA’s partnership with the American Association of Airport Executives in hosting the Airports Going Green conference from October 26-28, 2015. Now in its eighth year, this is the largest aviation sustainability conference in the country.
