egtmedia59Low-cost carriers are growing fast and British no-frills airline easyJet is one of the biggest.

EasyJet has just agreed to buy 135 fuel-efficient Airbus A320 passenger planes, including 100 next-generation neo aircraft. The planes are to be delivered between 2015 and 2022.

News of the major order of the single-aisle planes came on the second day of the Paris air show, which pitches Airbus against Boeing.EGT_Artical Banner A 250x250

German broadcaster Deutsche Welle said easyJet would pay EUR 8.9 billion (AUD 12.6 billion), much less than the list price for the aircraft in question.

“All manufacturers competed hard for the easyJet business,” easyJet chief executve Carolyn McCall said in a statement.

“Both Airbus and Boeing offered us new-generation aircraft that met our requirements and offered greatly improved fuel efficiency. But ultimately, Airbus offered us the best deal, and at a price with a greater discount than their landmark fleet purchase with easyJet in 2012.”

“The NEO is without doubt the most productive and fuel efficient aircraft around,” said John Leahy, chief operating officer – customers for Airbus.

“It has the widest and tallest cabin of any single aisle aircraft for faster turnaround operations and better passenger comfort. We are delighted our reliable aircraft have met easyJet’s demanding criteria.”

easyJet operates one of Europe’s most extensive route networks and is the UK’s largest airline carrying 55 million passenger a year. easyJet is also the largest A320 customer and operator in Europe.

Airbus says the A320 is the world’s most successful with over 9500 planes ordered and over 5600 delivered to over 380 customers and operators.
