Eco-lodge set for Christmas Island National Park

Plans for an eco-lodge inside Christmas Island National Park have been approved with construction expected to start later this year.

The solar-powered, glass-fronted luxury lodges will be established along a 500m stretch of coastline overlooking the rolling swell of the Indian Ocean.

The Swell Lodge proposal, from Chris Bray, will give the island’s visitors a beautiful base from which to explore the many stunning attractions – from blowholes to waterfalls, our secret beaches, turtles, and our famous red crabs – there really is something for everyone.

Acting Director of National Parks Judy West said the eco-accommodation proposal by Swell Lodge was a first for any national park managed by Parks Australia.

“They’ve satisfied the environmental requirements needed to operate inside our park and we’re excited to work with Chris Bray,” Dr West said.

“His eco-style accommodation will allow travellers to immerse themselves in one of Australia’s most extraordinary national parks. We believe this project will bring many benefits to the park and help to highlight its remarkable wildlife values.”

Known as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean, Christmas Island is teeming with wildlife found nowhere else in the world. It is home to the biggest land crabs on the planet, is internationally recognised for its tens of thousands of seabirds and its tropical waters boast world-class diving.

Sir David Attenborough described the annual red-crab migration as one of the 10 greatest natural wonders on Earth.

Last year Parks Australia ran an expression of interest process to attract environmentally friendly operators to share ideas that would complement the natural values of the island.

Fortunately Chris Bray and his wife Jess were poised to take this opportunity. The life-long adventurers seized the chance to establish a new eco-tourism business and settle at Christmas Island.

“We worked hard to find a suitable site and had an independent environmental impact assessment carried out involving ecological surveys both day and night,” he said.

“Following extensive consultation with the operators of some of the most amazing eco-style accommodation in the world we’ve taken the best ideas and designed eco-chalets fit for Christmas Island.

“Go to our website, sign up today and follow our journey as we build Swell Lodge into a dream destination for everyone who loves this planet. We’d love to hear from you, and one day soon, welcome you to our island home.”
