The NSW South Coast town of Eden has entered a new era of cruise tourism with the arrival of the first ship to utilise the port’s new $44 million wharf.
The arrival of P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer yesterday signalled the beginning of a busy cruise season for the scenic town, with another 21 cruise ships scheduled to visit over the coming summer.
Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz said Eden had become a regional cruising success story, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors a year.
“The local community in Eden is especially passionate about cruising and the work done by local businesses, tour operators, volunteers and regional authorities to welcome cruise passengers has helped drive excellent growth and return visitation,” Mr Katz said. “The new wharf at the Port of Eden is the latest step forward for this destination and sets up the entire region for more success in the future.”
Eden’s wharf has been extended to allow ships of up to 325m to berth without having to take passengers ashore by tender boats. The recently completed project is the result of a partnership involving the NSW Government, the Australian Government and Bega Valley Shire Council.
“The investment we’ve seen in Eden is one of several infrastructure projects around the country that will help support the cruise industry and grow regional tourism,” Mr Katz said. “Ports including Broome, Cairns and Brisbane are making significant improvements that will help ensure they remain successful cruise destinations into the future and create further economic benefits for local communities.”
