Egypt calls on India

Egypt Tourism delegation was in India for a first roadshow to update trade on the popular destination in the Middle East. 20 delegates from 10 leading sellers in Egypt interacted with trade members in Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmadabad and Bengaluru.Hisham El Demry, Chairman, Egyptian Tourism Promotion Board, told eGTMedia: “Tourist co-operation between India and Egypt has continued for long since historic times. We’re seeing that people in India are well informed about Egypt which has cultural inclination towards India. Egypt is not just classical but has a diversity of products like beach holidays, entertainment and even medical tours. There is a significant progress in arrivals recently and we believe that current numbers can be doubled or even tripled. We’re here to overview and observe the market.”

Egypt is a capsule containing all types of tourist products. Nile valley has witnessed many civilisations. Alexandria is a kind of fusion between Ptolemaic, Mediterranean and Egyptian, good for those looking for city breaks. White, black and crystal deserts of Egypt are serenity places that can be tracked on a 10 day tour. Diving is one of the USPs and Egypt is a yachting destination. Cruising on Nile is a dream journey and tourists can opt for 3 or 4 night itineraries on luxurious boats.

Ismail A Hamid Amer, Egyptian Tourism Counsellor, Mumbai, said: “Seasonality of travel is similar to that of India; April May in summer and Diwali festival time in winter. Mediterranean Sea is an offbeat product with Red Sea offering a classic tour. Egypt is a gateway to the African continent where visitors can meet Nubians, descendents of ancient African kingdom. Almost all countries have lifted travel ban on Egypt. Pope’s recent visit and visit by many Hollywood and Bollywood stars has reaffirmed on the safety of travelling to the country of magnificent monuments.”

Shopping has emerged as a new attraction with affordable Egyptian Pound. Buying in heritage building of Khan El Khalili market is an attraction in itself.

27 Indian women travellers celebrated International Women’s Day 2017 in Egypt. Vasuki Sundaram, Proprietor, Wings Travel & Tours, said: “We chose the country for its culture and came back enriched. Egypt is safe. One only has to choose a good local agent to arrange the tour.”

Christian Holy Family had stayed at 8 places in Egypt while in self-exile. These places are revered by pilgrim tourists who can further travel to Jordon by tracking the Holy Family footprints. Many Indian tour operators have started selling Sharm El Sheikh for 3 nights, with world class resorts along Red Sea.

Andreas M. Harter, General Manager, Spring Tours, Egypt, said: “Asia arrivals are growing with China leading the way. Indian food is the common demand by Indian tourists. Happy to say that Cairo now has 7 Indian restaurants, Sharm El Sheikh 5 and Luxor, Aswan and Hurghada have one each of Indian restaurants.”

Mr El Demry said: “We understand that India is big in cinema production. We can help make co-operation between Indian production houses and Cinema Chamber in Egypt. We have many memorable sites for Indian honeymoon travellers. Good connections with many flight options are helping travel between the two countries. We’re also in talks with airlines for increasing connections.”

80,000 Indians travelled to Egypt in 2016, an additional 4 percent over the previous year. Quarter one of 2017 has seen a big jump with 30 percent increase over the same period last year with an average stay of 7.2 nights per traveller.
